As of 1 April 2010, the IPW Code of Practice, by which the conduct of our business is governed, received approval under the Office of Fair Trading's Consumer Code Approval scheme, adding additional assurance. See:
Whilst this provides some much overdue degree of protection for the public from abuses current within the profession, this will not extend to protection against abuse of public trust by the many firms who will not be subscribing to the Code. The IPW, like the Law Society, therefore continues to press the Government's Legal Services Board, established in 2009 as a result of the 2007 Legal Services Act for statutory regulation within the profession, so as to provide further protection for members of the public.
We are a small friendly family firm, offering the kind of personal service that follows from this. There are just two offices: one in Coventry and one in Leominster.
New clients will join the thousands of existing satisfied clients throughout Coventry, Warwickshire, West Midlands, Herefordshire, Shopshire and Worcestershire
We are qualified, insured and regulated, and are the premier firm in Coventry and Warwickshire specialising in Will writing. Not everyone advertising themselves is. Many common advertisements are by so-called 'national' companies that in reality have only one office and operate through local agents recruited from diverse backgrounds. Usually they advertise unviable low costs to attract people's attention - costs that bear no relationship to what is actually charged once their foot is through the door.
For us to take instructions properly for a couple takes about 1¾ - 2 hours, even for standard straightforward wills. By the time we have actually prepared the wills and supervised their signing and witnessing, you are talking about something like 3½ - 4 hours work in total. Looking at some of the nominal costs advertised, if the firms were taking the necessary time, they would be working for less than the national minimum wage. Then you have to take into account the fact that the person acting as agent is only getting a percentage of that. The end results are therefore hardly surprising!
There are also firms who would have you fill in a form online or sent through the post. With these, the lack of the wide-ranging information, caveats, advice and guidance - and the consequent dangers is really self-evident. We do write a lot of Wills for people who realize the problems after they have obtained these forms and then thought about it!
Really, all adults should. Certainly married couples and, even more importantly, co-habiting partners. A will is absolutely vital, for several reasons, if you have young children, especially if any are from a previous relationship.
At the first appointment we advise you, discuss your requirements and take your instructions for the actual preparation of your Wills. In one of our two offices or, at no additional cost to you...
